Buyer's Guide:
There are different grades of air purifiers that I factor in the types of air that helps me pick out the right air purifier. If it is particle pollution in the air that can be captured or gasses that filters cannot pick up, there is a filter out there that will work best.

Many people first ask how powerful it is or how much air flow it gives? This is the buzz word everyone thinks is the most important. It is only important if it is actually filtering the air or capturing gasses.
Some filters have leaking problems from low quality frames and even if they are sealed correctly, sometimes they off-gas from leaching of the lubrications from the motors. A tight purifier where there it is sealed perfectly is the most expensive to get. Do you want 97% filtered air, 99% or 100% that comes through the purifier.

I prefer air purifiers that are made in the USA. If it is made in the USA I also prefer parts that weren't made in China and just shipped here to be assembled here. That is a not a truely USA made product, only a USA assembled product. Usually the cheaper purifiers filter the smallest particle levels, typically the non Chinese made. The most expensive filters get the lowest particle levels out of the air. These are the particles that get lodged in the lungs and are hard to get out.

Choosing an air purifier:
Many people open up their windows and remove the poisoned air in the house. Others, who live in the big cities, might be just bringing in more pollution. In certain cases, depending on where I am I will have to purify my own air. Many people live in places where there is not a lot of pollution and particulate in the air. But, they live in buildings where the sun's cosmic rays don't hit the air and the viruses and spore in the air that filters don't capture might call for a UV light, which is totally different than filtering the air. Killing the bacteria and molds is a different thing that filtering particulate.

Many people have complaints about the air not from particulate but from the microbes and gasses in the air that they can't see by shining a laser and seeing all the dust.

People with poor body ecologies who have a "beer brewery" in their gut breathing out acidic air are the ones that are constantly inhaling it and others have to inhale their wastes too. No wonder everyone in the house catches what the other person has. Many of the contageous microbes can live in the air and are so light that they don't ever fall out of the air, similar to an odor that just lingers.

• Airborne spread of bacteria, virus, mold, fungi, yeast, VOC’s or chemical agents can happen anywhere
• Depending on the size of the airborne agents it can stay constantly in the air without reaching any surface. This is why in many cases even a tight clean control of water or surfaces within a room will not solve the problem, the airborne infection agents will stay constantly in the air.

The most harmful of these airborne hosts are usually under 3 microns where most filters can't capture.
In a movie theater where the average person is exhaling about 6 to 7 liters a minute, I can only imagine how many pathogens are coming out of the breath, especially those with the white hazy tongue. There will be lots of people buying air purifiers that will think that because they have an air filter they will be fine. Killing the bugs is not the same thing as filtering them, if they are big enough to be filtered. The last thing I would want is to have a breeding ground for bacteria in my filter.

Choosing the Right Size Air Purifier:
After finding the right type of purification system, the next thing is finding the right size so you can get the amount of air changes per hour that is needed to purifier the air. Typically, in a small room, about 3 changes per hour are optimal. If people are smoking in the room then about 6 is optimal. The more toxic the air is the more changes that will be recommended depending on what the particulate is. Be aware that the more changes per hour the louder the purifier usually is.

In order to get the right size purifier that will actually give you the needed changes per hour you will need to measure the size of the room in cubic feet. After finding the cubic footage of the room you will be able to find the total amount of air flow needed. If you need more air flow than the purifier can handle, you might need two air purifiers. Also, if you have the wrong air flow direction and the air doesn't circulate properly, maybe you have a lot of stuff in the room that blocks the circular air flow pattern, you might have to make other arrangements. Not only does having more than 1 purifier give more air changes per hour but you can customize your own air flow pattern so they work more efficiently. Many people like keeping the purifiers on low and creating an air pattern so their is more air changes per minute without so much noise.

Note: The air flow change rate is not always the most important thing to rate. I always take into consideration that sometimes I have people over and at an average of 12 breaths per minute, it can add up to a lot of waste in the air. If the windows are open and my purifier only gives 4 changes per hour in the way it is set up, if I have the windows open it can lower the rating. If I close closet doors and bathroom doors in the home, it can give more changes per hour. If I am just going to be in my bedroom the whole night, I don't need to filter the whole house, I will need less changes per hour since the area will be smaller I am filtering. Some people have timers they have on their filters that come on at certain times. If someone is gone all day long and they know that their air purifier will change the room's air 6 times in an hour to get it 99.9% filtered and it will only take 75 minutes, for example, for the size of the area, they will set it so that it goes on 75 minute before they come home for the day. They come home to fresh, filtered air.
Before you buy a purifier:  know the following
1 are you trying to purifiy fine particles or heavier dust
2 are you trying to get trap gases & odors
3 Are their molds? Are their people with colds or bacteria in the house?

Knowing this I can pick out an air purifier much better. The more I know about your air the more I will know how much carbon is needed and how big of a fan is needed. You can have a powerful fan that circulates more air but less of the carbon and hepa filter. I can also find out how many air changes per hour that might be needed. Call me to discuss only after you take my air questionnaire.
Buying Guide

Make sure the air purifier is ETL certified. Thats number one. The more stamps of approval the better. The Airgle has the most stamps of approval based on all the air purifiers I have researched.

KNow the wattage used. Some use 15 watts on low. some use 30 watts, and some use 40 watts to do the same job and push teh same amount of air. This goes for the high settings too. Some have copper windings in the motor and others aluminum wires. Motors can cost a company nearly twice as much for a high end brushless motor. Many are cheaper to buy up front but you pay in the end as its not as green. If you want a green energy model, let me know and I will go over the ones that use the least amount of electricity per day.

Beware: the air from leaks in windows and doors, the air can be cycled every few hours in the house. So if the purifier turns the air 4 times and hour and the windows make it so its only turning 3 times an hour. If the doors are open a lot it can add to the turns. Many people close their doors to get the air super clean in the house but daily I open my doors and oxygenate the house daily. I don't even think about it. I just leave the door open while I'm making dinner. When dehyrating my raw chocolate chip cookies with actual Tahitian vanilla bean instead of extract, it smells up the whole house. My air purifier still can't compete with the smell of my cookies while the dehydrator is on. (Anyone want to know my recipe let me know. I love sharing. I can even send some vanilla beans. These are the plumpest, juiciest beans I buy. Not the cheap dried out ones you buy at the health food store.

I always wonder why there are high returns on some air purifiers. I want to say that many of the cheaper ones are good if its just for a small room or there aren't gasses and lot of pollutants in the area but buyign a cheap one and expecting it to do what the high end one do, it probably won't work and thats why people return them. If I tried to sell a purifier such as the Aireox to someone and they needed a Hepa and not just activated carbon, they would probably return it. But for the people having smoky homes or a neighbor in the apartment building where smoke comes under their door and into your window or door, having just a carbon is fine.
